Executive Director Note
In 2025, Human Rights Coalition (HRC) met the moment with organizing, public education, legislative advocacy, and community-based programming—led by directly impacted people and our allies.
We amplified movement analysis through three issues of The Movement magazine, strengthened national connections through environmental and climate justice conferences in New York City and Detroit, and brought our community together through major convenings like the True Faces of Second Chance Awards Gala.
We also moved policy and narrative in concrete ways: supporting the urgent call for the release of Jerome “Hoagie” Coffey, mobilizing at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg to abolish solitary confinement, and advancing accountability reforms—helping establish an Independent Prison Oversight Board within Philadelphia government over the Philadelphia Department of Prisons.
Alongside this, our End Toxic Prisons work continued to expose environmental injustice and public health harm. We organized, published, and lobbied—visiting 35 legislators, releasing a major campaign report, and helping build momentum that resulted in two state prisons closing.
Finally, HRC expanded clean energy and community resilience work through two Philadelphia Community Solar town halls, two justice-impacted community resource fairs, and the launch of a major education campaign funded by a $250,000 restricted Thriving Communities grant through the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative.
This annual report reflects what we built together in 2025—and what we are committed to deepening in 2026.
In solidarity,
Shakaboona Marshall
